The rate at which students fail external exams (particularly WAEC, UTME, and IGCSE) is quite alarming. It is as though the failure rate keeps increasing every year.

In a publication by the Guardian Newspaper, it was recorded that about 74% of the students that wrote WAEC in 2020 failed. Asides that, the Vanguard Newspaper also reported that there was 86% failure at the just-concluded 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB.

However, amidst all of these failures, I’m pleased to let you know that there are still a few students who performed excellently in these same exams. For example, while there was a 74% failure rate in the 2020 WAEC examination, there was also a 16% success rate. Although it’s quite small when compared to the failure rate, it is still enough to serve as a glimmer of hope for students who plan to partake in any external exam this year.

Let your mind be at rest because this blog post is not meant to plant fear in you or your kids (Of course not!) but to let you know that there are proven ways through which your kids can ace these exams without any form of stress. Today, we’d be discussing 3 of them.

Charles Kendall Adams once said that, “No student ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him: it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above the required, that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction,” and I totally agree with him. I understand that your child might have been studying for a long time now, but the truth remains that if he wants an extraordinary result, he has to go the extra mile. Now is not the time to study, but to study even harder.

Asides from being present in class, students who are preparing for external exams such as WAEC, IGCSE, UTME, must form the habit of studying harder. This is the price that other outstanding students have had to pay. If any student would want to be like them, they must be ready to pay the price too.

Another thing scholarly students do is to get extra help when the time for their external examination is drawing closer. This extra help being referred to is far beyond what a teacher can provide within the four walls of a classroom. After all, once the closing bell rings, a student barely has access to his teachers anymore.

In most cases, this extra help comes from a professional tutor who is capable of providing all the necessary support needed for that child to ace his exam. 3 major reasons why an extra help is necessary for students are:

They go beyond what was taught in class.
They help to find the weaknesses of the student (this is much easier since the mode of learning is personal,) and help him to be absolutely ready for the forthcoming exams.
They help students with their assignments and anything that might seem difficult.

There’s always a limit to what a student can learn in the classroom or even on his own. This Is why it’s necessary to get an extra hand!

Practice, they say, brings perfection.

As much as it’s necessary to study hard and even get extra help, it’s also important that students practice. By practice, I mean that students need to have an experience of what it feels like to actually be sitting in an exam hall and writing that exam.

Mock exams are the best ways to practice. A mock exam is an exam that is set by an educational body with the sole aim of helping the students prepare and practice for the real exam which is yet to come. In a mock exam students are graded, but the grades do not count.

I strongly suggest that if your child is preparing for a really important exam, he should practice by taking part in the mock exam.

This is just about it. As simple and basic as these three methods are, they are the reasons why some set of students performed exceptionally in their exams. The honest truth is that these things aren’t even a secret anymore, students just fail to pay any attention to them.

Anyway, I’m sure that as you’ve read this far, you’re probably thinking, “how can I get my child to study harder?” Or “how do I get a tutor for my child?” Or “how do I even get my child to write a mock exam?”
