A speech is said to be formal when it is a well written speech prepared in advance and informal when the speaker is not expected to read whatever he/she has to say, when once the speaker is very familiar with the topic, he/she is expected to speak on.
There are four basic question a speech writer must ask himself at the preliminary stage, which include:
Why I have been chosen to speak?
Who are my listeners or audience?
What effect do I want my speech to have on my listeners or audience?
What facts do I include or exclude?
Parts of a Speech
Title: In formal speech, the title is usually written first before any other thing. In this case, it is written in bold letters. For example:
A WELCOME ADDRESS PRESENTED BY THE GOVERNOR OF ABIA STATE, DR. OKEZIE, TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, MUHAMMADU BUHARI, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS FIRST VISIT TO ABIA STATE, THIS 10TH DAY OF JANUARY, 2019.
Salutation: The salutation in speeches usually respects the rules of protocol. The dignitaries in attendance must be recognized and this acknowledgement follows the order of supremacy and importance. A normal salutation may take the following format:
Your Excellency, the Head of State and commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammadu Buhari; Honorable Ministers here present; Your excellencies, the state governors; Honorable commissioners; Your Royal Highnesses; Ladies and gentlemen. All protocols observed.
Introduction: The introductory part of speech is very important and indispensable. It contains the background information guiding the speech in question. It functions to put the audience in such a position that every other information contained in the speech would be meaningful.
Body of the Speech: This contains the speech proper. t is divided into parts via paragraphs and subtitle. The writer must not lose focus of his objectives in the speech.
Conclusion: This concludes the speech and therefore comes last. It sums up the entire speech as it highlights all the main points of the essay. No new point should be introduced in this section of the writing and a strong closing line should be used to leave a lasting impression in the readers’ mind.
